Copy, Line, and Developmental Editing

Welcome to GdS Editorial Services
If you’ve searched the internet for an editor, you know there’s no shortage of editing talent for a writer—or publisher, media company, or nonprofit/nongovernmental organization—to choose from.
So why hire GdS Editorial Services?
I am George De Stefano, the founder and principal of GdS Editorial Services. I am an expert word mechanic who can make any piece of writing run better. I will ensure that your writing impresses readers with its clarity, precision, and professionalism. My attention to detail and sharp eye for grammar and style will help you convey your message as effectively as possible.
I provide copy, line, and substantive editing of nonfiction books (trade and academic), essays and articles, online content, reports, educational materials, and other publications of public and private agencies. I offer a combination of skills, experience, subject matter expertise, and affordability you’re unlikely to find elsewhere.
My background spans over 30 years of experience as an editor in journalism (print and online), trade and academic publishing, and nonprofit and nongovernmental agencies.
My subject matter expertise is broad, encompassing social science, the humanities, popular culture, social and political issues, health, and public health.
I have edited nonfiction books for major publishers, including Cambridge University Press, Hachette, Palgrave Macmillan, The Nation, Monthly Review, and Perseus. I also work with individual authors to develop their manuscripts for submission to publishers.
I additionally edit reports, guides, and training curricula for nongovernmental organizations.
As the editorial manager of the publications office at a major public health agency, I conceptualized, wrote, and edited a range of materials, including brochures, pamphlets, scientific articles, and reports, for both the general public and medical specialists. I oversaw the entire editorial process, from the concept through writing, editing, and production. I also supervised the translation of these materials into multiple languages, making them accessible to millions in New York and beyond.
I work with several style guides, including the Chicago, AP, New York Times, and UK (Butcher’s/Cambridge) styles. I edit and proofread using Microsoft’s “track changes” function and Adobe Acrobat’s editing tools.
I have a Certificate in Editing from Poynter News University. I am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), the American Copy Editors Society (ACES), and the National Association of Independent Writers and Editors (NAIWE).
